Island Sands: Direct Oceanfront on Maʻalaea Bay
Stay at Island Sands and you’re on a quieter stretch of Maui — the Maʻalaea coast, the bay that opens west across the channel toward Kahoʻolawe, Lanaʻi, and the small crescent of Molokini in the middle distance. The property is a direct-oceanfront condo building with the practical advantage of sitting five minutes’ walk from Maʻalaea Harbor, where most of the island’s Molokini snorkel boats and undersea adventures depart at sunrise.
Island Sands is a smaller-scale property, and Maui Paradise Properties currently manages a one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit here that sleeps up to four — king bed in the bedroom, sleeper sofa with a new mattress in the living room, and a fully equipped kitchen with granite counters and bamboo cabinetry. The unit was refreshed recently with new furniture and flooring throughout, and the lanai has a remote-controlled motorized shade system for when the afternoon sun comes in strong off the bay. AC at Island Sands varies by unit; the current rental has a window unit in the living room, with ceiling fans cooling the rest of the space.
The shared amenities include: a heated pool, gas BBQ grills, in-building elevators, and designated parking included with the stay. The lanai delivers 180-degree views of the bay, and at nightfall the lights of the Kihei coast across the water complete the picture.
What sets Maʻalaea apart from the larger Kaʻanapali and Wailea resort areas is the proximity to the harbor and the slower pace. The Maui Ocean Center sits five minutes’ drive away — Hawaiʻi’s largest tropical aquarium, with hammerhead and turtle exhibits the kids will lean against the glass for. Snorkel charters, whale watch boats during humpback whale season (December through April), and sunset sails all leave from the harbor, and on the way out of the bay it’s common to see whale activity in the channel — Maʻalaea is one of the better shoreline whale-watching positions on Maui in winter.
